GWP's mission is is to advance governance and management of water resources for sustainable and equitable development. GWP support States and all stakeholders in the sustainable management of their water resources in order to achieve their related development goals. It does so in particular through the promotion of Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) at all levels.
The function of the Chairperson of GWP-WA is to lead GWP-WA in achieving its core mission of promoting water security in West Africa. In particular, the Chairperson works to build alliances and fortify research, expertise and information networks in the West African region in order to strengthen the institutional capacities of the States and the various stakeholders in Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM). The Chairperson of the West Africa Regional Water Partnership chairs the Partners' Assembly and the Steering Committee and represents the Partnership in all civil acts.
He/she is recruited by the Steering Committee for a two-year term, renewable only once.
Candidates for the position of Chair of GWP-WA must be political, scientific or technical personalities from one of the West African countries with recognized experience in cooperation and partnership building.
The missions of the Chairperson of GWP-WA are detailed in the TORs for the Steering Committee members including the Chairperson as well.
The GWP-WA Chairperson must be able to commit approximately ten weeks per year, including participation in the two annual Steering Committee meetings and the biennial Partners' Assembly meeting, each of which may be held over two to three days in a West African country.
The GWP-WA Chairperson receives a limited remuneration depending on the availability of the budget and on the efforts made. The daily rate of remuneration of the Chairperson is set by the GWP-WA Steering Committee. In case of mission on behalf of GWP-WA, all travel, accommodation and per diem expenses of the Chairperson shall be borne by GWP-WA according to the rates set by the Global Water Partnership Organization (GWPO) Global Executive Secretariat.
The working languages of GWP-WA are French and English.
The recruited Chairperson is expected to take office on late September/early October 2021 after his/her confirmation by the Assembly of Partners
