New public hygiene law approved
Approval of a new public hygiene law by the National Assembly of the Republic of Benin in January 2022 marked the successful culmination of a sustained period of advocacy by the Consultation Framework of Non-State Actors in the Water and Sanitation Sector (CANEA), which is led by GWP Benin. CANEA had been advocating for the new public hygiene law since 2013, and helped draft the approved legislation, which updated a hygiene code dating from 1987.
The hygiene law covers multiple aspects of public hygiene in Benin, taking account of current realities and challenges in the country. For the first time, it specifies the role of decentralised communities in promoting hygiene, and considers the issue of hygiene in public buildings, educational establishments, health facilities, and detention centres, as well as the management of corpses and of menstrual hygiene.
Helping Guinea achieve SDG 6
The development of an action plan to tackle priority issues in the water and sanitation sector in Guinea took a significant step forward in November 2021 when a preliminary draft for the plan was validated during a meeting of key stakeholders. GWP Guinea contributed to drafting the plan, which was developed to help Guinea achieve SDG 6 โ โclean water and sanitation for allโ.
The plan aims to help the country move forward on SDG 6 in a coordinated way. It sets out a new approach whereby donors agree on a series of projects and then divide the work among themselves. This approach allows priority issues to be identified and addressed in a participatory manner to enhance their impact and outcomes.
