New Thinking in Water Management

To stimulate new thinking to improve Sri Lanka’s natural resources management, the first Young Water Professionals Symposium for the country was organized by GWP Sri Lanka in association with IWMI and Unilever on 22-23 November in Colombo with the participation of the Hon Minister of Water Supply and Drainage Dinesh Gunawardene and Prof Mohan Munasinghe, Nobel Peace Prize winner 2007 (IPCC), and over 150 participants.

Young Water Professionals

The symposium gave an opportunity for young water professionals to define their aspirations, articulate their perspectives, and contribute to out-of-the-box thinking to better plan, manage and utilize water resources. It was open to graduate level mid-career water professionals employed in water sector institutions with at least seven years of work/study experience. Participants were encouraged to submit one page abstracts on the following subject areas: optimizing water utilization, water delivery, economic/ financial feasibility, good governance, environmental stability as well as cross cutting themes.

Technical Session

At the Technical Session, 24 presentations were made by selected authors. An Awards Committee comprising representatives from IWMI, GWP Sri Lanka and the Open University evaluated and ranked the presenters. Three awards will be made and the proceedings of the Symposium including the papers submitted will be published. As a follow up activity the recommendations/outcome of the Symposium will be developed into a policy brief through an Expert Consultation and submitted to the authorities for consideration.
