Outcomes of the Workshop on IWRM in Libya

The 'Workshop on IWRM in Libya: Current Status and Way Forward, demonstrated by national, regional and international experiences’, took place on 11 and 12 April 2007, in Tripoli.

The Workshop was hosted by the Libyan General Water Authority (GWA) with the support and collaboration of UNEP through its Collaborating Centre on Water and Environment (UCC-Water), the African Development Bank (AfDB), the African Water Facility (AWF) and the Global Water Partnership – Mediterranean (GWP-Med).

The Workshop forms part of the activities of the Mediterranean Component of the EU Water Initiative (MED EUWI) and the GEF Strategic Partnership for Mediterranean Large Marine Ecosystems. The activity is following up on the process for strengthening IWRM planning in North African countries that started with the Rabat Seminar (January 2006) and responds to the related Rabat Declaration.

The Workshop contributed directly to the enhancement of the Libyan National Strategy for Water Resources Management 2000-2025. The agreed Recommendations focus on issues of (i) governance and institutional development, (ii) water availability and use and (iii) water efficiency.

Follow up activities have been discussed and will be supported by GWA and the Workshop Organizers that expressed mutual commitment to continue their effort for further promoting IWRM in Libya.
