Caribbean Partners in Water and Wastewater Meet to Strengthen Collaboration

Over thirty (30) regional organisations working in the areas of water and wastewater in the Caribbean, will meet in Barbados on April 28th and 29th, 2014 at the Courtyard Marriott Hotel, to critically explore ways of strengthening their collaboration to improve water security in the region.

The Meeting of Regional Partners in the Water and Wastewater Sector is being spearheaded by the Global Water Partnership-Caribbean (GWP-C), the United Nations Environment Programme, Caribbean Regional Coordinating Unit (UNEP-CAR/RCU) and the Global Environment Facility’s Caribbean Regional Fund for Wastewater Management (GEF CReW).

During the two-day Meeting, participating organisations will have the opportunity to work together to identify new mechanisms and ways to strengthen existing ones to help raise the profile of water and wastewater in the region. Additionally, the activity will enable stakeholders to highlight critical regional water and wastewater management issues and share details of ongoing and planned projects in these areas.

Key to discussions, which are structured in a very interactive way, will be agreement on a way forward to facilitate more effective collaboration among the agencies and identifying existing regional projects, tools and resources in water and wastewater to inform individual and joint efforts.

This meeting will also build on past regional collaborative initiatives including the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Consortium on Water which was established in 2010 with a mandate to develop a Common Water Framework for its member states in order to rationalise and coordinate the region’s programmes and activities in the areas of water resources management. Caribbean Partners in Water and Wastewater to Launch New Tools and Resources to Benefit the Region’s Water Sector

Over the course of the two-day Regional Meeting of Partners in the Water and Wastewater Sector in the Caribbean the Global Water Partnership-Caribbean (GWP-C), the United Nations Environment Programme, Caribbean Regional Coordinating Unit (UNEP-CAR/RCU) and the Global Environment Facility’s Caribbean Regional Fund for Wastewater Management (GEF CReW) are partnering to host a Knowledge Sharing Session on New Tools and Resources for Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) in the Caribbean.

IWRM is an holistic approach to managing water that takes into consideration that different uses of water are interdependent. IWRM means that water allocations and management decisions consider the effects of each use on the other. Essentially, the approach is grounded in the understanding that water resources are an integral component of the ecosystem, a natural resource, and a social and economic good.

The Session will be held in Barbados at the Courtyard Marriott Hotel on April 29th, 2014 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The regional agencies hosting this unique Knowledge Sharing Session aim to highlight and launch recently developed Caribbean IWRM knowledge products which focus on tools geared toward building climate resilience in the Caribbean water sector, as well as, resources for wastewater sector professionals.

This includes products developed under the Caribbean Climate Online Risk and Adaptation Tool (CCORAL)-Water initiative, a joint collaboration between GWP-C and the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC), funded by the Climate and Development Knowledge Network. The Session will also showcase wastewater videos and materials from the GEF CReW, an effluent discharge database and other resources.

Representatives from more than fifty (50) regional and national agencies in water and wastewater management are scheduled to attend the Session. Download Press Release here.
