GWP-C Contributes to Global Water Resources Report

Two countries from the Caribbean region, Jamaica and Antigua were selected for a United Nations (UN) Water Resources Report which looks specifically at the application of integrated approaches to the development, management and use of water resources.

The United Nations (UN) Commission on Sustainable Development in its 13th Session in 2005 urged Governments and the United Nations to take actions related to water resources management. In charting the progress of decisions made since that time the Commission embarked on developing a global “Water Resources Status Report” with the aim of presenting it at the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD Rio+20) which will be held in Rio de Janeiro Brazil on June 4th-6th, 2012.

The status report was partially facilitated by Global Water Partnership (GWP) who contributed to the evaluation of 25 countries through the help of its 13 Regional Water Partnerships (RWPs).

With Jamaica and Antigua being the selected countries for the Caribbean region, GWP-C in adhering to the guidelines of the survey, selected suitable partners and strategic allies in the countries chosen to provide data and be interviewed for the water report.

The report development phases include:

1. Data collection though a global survey.

2. In-depth interviews in selected countries.

3. Analysis and report writing.

4. Dissemination of results before and at the UNCSD Rio+20 Conference.

5. Development of a future reporting framework.

The report will be used as the basis for informed decision-making by the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development and national Governments.
