Support Needed for the Water and Sewerage Corporation (WSC) of The Bahamas

Hurricane relief efforts are underway in Abaco and Grand Bahama. Search and recovery efforts continue, as you have probably seen or heard in the news. Shortly, our Partner, the Water and Sewerage Corporation (WSC) of The Bahamas, will start rebuilding the water and sewerage infrastructure.

A committee of key water agencies has been formed to assist in helping WSC and roles and responsibilities have been assigned.

Our Partner, the Caribbean Water and Wastewater Association (CWWA) is spearheading fundraising and taking donations via the WiPay e-payment system on their website: http://cwwa.net/. The “Donate” option can be found on the extreme top right-hand menu of their website. These donations will be used in efforts to restore access to, operational capacity of, and repairs to, critical infrastructure equipment. Monies are needed to fund airfares and accommodation for volunteers travelling to work in The Bahamas in the water sector.

The WSC of The Bahamas may also accept direct donations as a Donor Unit/Centre is being set-up and more details on this will follow. The WSC can be contacted directly or through their General Manager, Mr. Elwood Donaldson at wcedonaldson@wsc.com.bs. As well as through regular government to government channels. Global Water Partnership-Caribbean (GWP-C) can also help to facilitate connecting you to the WSC if necessary.

If you are offering equipment or qualified volunteers who wish to assist WSC, we ask that you follow the protocol outlined. Timing is critical and volunteers who come prematurely, are taking accommodation and limited food supplies from those assisting in the recovery effort. Deployment will therefore be coordinated, in order to maximise the impact.

Our Partner, the Caribbean Water and Sewerage Association Inc. (CAWASA) is taking the lead role in accepting offers of volunteers or equipment. For qualified volunteers with experience in the water and wastewater authority or offers of equipment please contact: CAWASA at sjoseph@cawasa.org and copy Valerie Jenkinson of Operators Without Borders at info@operatorswithoutborders.com. Donations can also be made to Operators Without Borders via Paypal at: https://bit.ly/2kDSCig.
