Climate Change

With critical challenges, such as climate change, the Mediterranean region is even more prone to issues such as water scarcity and extreme weather events, including droughts and floods.

These will heavily impact on freshwater availability in terms of quantity and quality.

The Northern parts of the region often face extreme precipitation events, such as heavy rainfalls causing floods and mudslides. Climate change is an additional factor to be taken into account in Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM).

Water-related adaptation strategies should be developed in a manner to address or prevent future crises and reduce the vulnerability of the region.
