The workshop aimed to strengthen Malaysia’s readiness for the fourth global round of SDG 6.5.1 reporting by enhancing understanding, coordination, and data preparation among state-level water managers and agencies. It also served as a platform to review progress since the 2023 Global Survey (Round 3) and to align national actions with regional initiatives under the Pan Asia Water Governance Improvement Programme.
This effort directly supports Goal 1: We Mobilize, particularly Outcome Challenge 1.4, which emphasizes that “regional and country IWRM strategic events are systematically designed and organized to address IWRM challenges at the regional and country level.”
Through this workshop, GWP Malaysia brought together state and national actors to identify implementation gaps, exchange best practices, and prepare inputs for Malaysia’s SDG 6.5.1 self-assessment, ensuring a coordinated and inclusive approach to IWRM implementation.
The two-day in-person event featured a dynamic mix of presentations, facilitated discussions, and group exercises that encouraged shared learning and reflection.
Dr. Zelina Zaiton Ibrahim served as the lead facilitator and main speaker, guiding participants through the SDG 6.5.1 reporting framework, indicator methodology, and national assessment process.
The workshop gathered more than 35 representatives from state-level Departments of Irrigation and Drainage (Jabatan Pengairan dan Saliran – JPS) and state water management authorities (Badan Kawal Selia Air – BKSA) across Malaysia, including Sarawak, Kelantan, Terengganu, Johor, Perak, Selangor, Kedah, Pulau Pinang, and the Federal Territories (Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya).
Participants also included representatives from the Lembaga Sumber Air Negeri (LSA) and Bahagian Pengurusan Sumber Air dan Hidrologi (BPSAH, JPS), ensuring broad coverage of key institutions involved in water governance and regulation at the state level.
