Technical meeting to strengthen the resilience of communities and ecosystems to climate risks in the Volta Basin through the Nature-based Solutions approach

As part of the implementation of the activities of the project "Integrating Flood and Drought Management and Early Warning for Climate Change Adaptation in the Volta Basin (VFDM)", the VBA in collaboration with WMO, GWP-WA and IUCN organised and held six (6) national technical workshops on nature-based solutions for the development of bankable projects to mobilise funding for implementation in the national portions and at the scale of the entire Volta basin.

The workshops allowed the capacity building of two hundred and fourteen (214) people, including 51 women, on the "nature-based solutions" approach, as well as the framework for designing or analysing NBSs (IUCN Standard composed of 8 criteria and 28 indicators). Twenty-seven (27) project ideas were identified and analysed according to the NBS assessment criteria and improved the participants' knowledge of funding opportunities for bankable NBS projects as well as the partners' requirements for mobilising their resources.

At the end of these different national workshops, the participants recommended, among other things, the development of concept notes based on the identified and evaluated project ideas, which is in line with the final objective of these training workshops, which is to develop a project concept note to be presented at a regional workshop that will bring together the different national stakeholders.

A technical meeting to assess the situation and prospects was organised and held at the VBA with the participation of GWP-WA, IUCN and the Executive Secretariat of the Green Climate Fund of Burkina Faso. This meeting allowed to exchange on the organisation of national workshops, the different project ideas, then to define a roadmap and a methodology allowing to write a concept note of regional project on the Volta basin to face climate change related problems through the Nature-based Solutions.

The meeting aimed to consolidate / develop projects from the six (6) countries in order to support the development of a concept note for the establishment of a regional programme sensitive to nature-based solutions and focused on adaptation, resilience to climate change and sustainable development.
