As river basins are the geographical units of IWRM implementation, all IWRM training will be coupled with modules on sustainable river basin management.
This capacity building was carried out in collaboration with CWP-Benin, which brought its expertise in IWRM implementation at the local level. The training took place for 2 weeks, one in Parakou, gathering the Communes of five Departments (Borgou, Alibori, Atacora, Donga and Collines), then, the second in Bohicon in the Center, gathering the Communes of the South and Center Departments. A total of 48 communes in the twelve departments of the country were involved, with 101 participants (45 in the North and 56 in the South).
This workshop is part of the technical capacity building of local water stakeholders in accordance with the provisions of Law on the organization of municipalities in Benin.
Organized by the African Center of Excellence for Water and Sanitation of the National Water Institute of the University of Abomey Calavi with the financial support of the World Bank (WB) and the French Development Agency (AFD), the workshop was attended by executives of the municipalities, several managers of consulting firms, companies, members of Associations of Drinking Water Consumers (ACEP) and Citizen Participation Cells (CPC) and leaders of NGOs working in the water sub-sector.
The workshop provided participants with knowledge on Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) for a rational and appropriate use of these resources.
The recommendations formulated by the participants included continuing to strengthen the capacity of actors at the grassroots level, organizing a training session for mayors, deputy mayors and district chiefs on IWRM, making available to the communes the texts for their popularization, organizing a restitution session of this training to the actors at the base, etc.
