What is the Mékrou Project? What does it mean for the beneficiary countries? What do the stakeholders and implementing partners think of it? This film tries to answer all these questions so that you can better know the project "water for growth and poverty reduction in the transboundary Mekrou basin" financed by the EU Commission and implemented by GWP and the JRC in the Mékrou river basin shared by Benin, Burkina Faso and Niger.
Implementing Pilot projects to satisfy needs
The Mékrou Project (Water for Growth and Poverty Reduction in the Mekrou Transboundary Basin) supports the implementation of pilot projects in each of the three countries (Benin, Burkina Faso and Niger) that are the project beneficiaries. This film gives with the implementing actors basic information on each pilot project. This Mékrou Project is funded by the EU Commission and implemented by Global Water Partnership (GWP) and the Joint Research Center (JR).
Framework agreement to promote political dialogue
The Mékrou Project coordinated the signing process of the Framework Agreement for the Promotion of Political Dialogue in the Mekrou Transboundary Basin between Benin, Burkina Faso and Niger. This film presents this document with the main actors.
Rehabilitating water points in the Niger W Park biosphere reserve
The W Park in Niger is a reserve of more than 200,000 hectares which contains several wildlife species and a wide variety of biodiversity. Niger is in a very arid region, where the dry season is long and hard for all these species. The Niger pilot project aims at achieving a reservoir of water with a capacity of 16 thousand m3 which can maintain water for a certain period after the end of the rainy season. This action is very important not only for the fauna but also for all the surrounding ecosystems.
Burkina Faso: Development of cross-border trashumance tracks in the province of Gourma
The pilot project implemented in Burkina Faso as part of the Mékrou Project deals with the delimitation of the corridor of passage of animals in the framework of the regional transhumance from Niger towards Benin. This transhumance creates conflicts that lead to many losses of life.
The realization of a corridor with the provision of rest areas with drillings will help to prevent conflicts and improve the living and working conditions of the populations of the localities crossed. This film explains the work that has been done.
