IWRM for the Hydrological Unit of Assanto in the Commune of Zagnanado

Zangnanado is a rural commune located in the Department of Zou (center of Benin). The implementation of activities of the OmiDelta Governance Component with the establishment of Local Water Committees (LWCs) allowed the identification of two hydrological units in GBADOHOUIN and ASSANTÔ, in the Lower and Middle Ouémé Valley.

The Hydrological Unit of Assanto located in the eastern part of the commune of Zagnanado bounded by the villages of Kinwédji, Zonmon, Avéhénou and Adjégounlè.

The Hydrological Unit is valued by the riparian communities for agricultural production, livestock, food processing and the production of packaged water and fruit juices. This valorization is subject to problems of degradation of the banks and crops by transhumant cattle, pollution by anthropic activities and filling in. In the search for a sustainable solution approach, the users of this HU have been supported by CWP-Benin alongside the General Directorate of Water of Benin for a better organization of the actors at the base in accordance with the orientations of the institutional framework of Integrated Water Resources Management in Benin. This support is made on the governance component of the OmiDelta project financed by the Netherlands through SNV.

Thus, on November 10, 2020, the water users were sensitized on the texts of the law on water and environment as well as on the institutional framework of IWRM which provides for the implementation of the LWCs at the level of the HUs. This activity motivated the consultations for the designation of representatives of the different categories of actors. A preparatory committee of 5 members was set up to conduct an exhaustive inventory of users by category of actors. The results of the committee's work were validated by all the actors. The different categories of actors proceeded to the designation of their representative at the constitutive general assembly held on November 25, 2020. The CLE-Assanto is composed of 22 members including 8 women and headed by a board of 5 members chaired by the Chief of District of Agonli Houégbo.

The CLE-Assanto will be strengthened by CWP-Benin for the development and implementation of its work plan.
