This activity is part of the RIWE-Mono Project (2024–2028), implemented by the Mono Basin Authority (ABM), the Sahara and Sahel Observatory (OSS), IUCN and the Global Water Partnership – West Africa (GWP-WA), and funded by @TheGEF.
The workshop aimed to strengthen the capacities of community actors for integrated management of natural resources, particularly water, and to promote sustainable practices in the Mono Biosphere Reserve.
The workshop brought together 34 participants, including representatives from ABM, community biodiversity conservation associations (ACCB), forestry services, GWP-WA, PNE Benin, and resource persons.
Content and Methodology
Over four days, participants attended interactive modules on:
- Environmental communication and awareness
- Conflict management related to natural resources
- Planning, conservation, and ecological monitoring
- Surveillance and protection of protected areas
- Regulations and ecotourism
The workshop combined presentations, group work, case studies, and field visits, fostering participatory and practical learning.

Innovative Practical Exercise
A highlight of the training was the application exercise using ecological monitoring tools, including drones and camera traps for wildlife monitoring and surveillance of sensitive areas. This technological approach aims to improve observation accuracy and strengthen community capacity to protect biodiversity.
Expected Results
- Better understanding of the roles and responsibilities of community relays and eco-guards.
- Development of a post-training roadmap for leveraging acquired knowledge.
- Awarding of certificates to participants.
This workshop marks an important step in preserving the ecosystems of the Mono Basin by strengthening collaboration between local communities and regional institutions.
