Organised by the Water Resources Management Centre (WRMC) of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, the Department of Agriculture, Water Resources and Environment (DAREN) of the Commission of the West African Economic and Monetary Union ( WAEMU) and the Executive Secretariat of the Permanent Inter-State Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel (CILSS) in collaboration with the Global Water Partnership in West Africa (GWP-WA) as well as the Global Secretariat and the Africa Coordination Unit of the Global Water Partnership (GWP), The initiative is part of the implementation of the West African Water Resources Policy (WAWRP), the ECOWAS Environment Policy and the WAEMU Common Environmental Improvement Policy (PCAE), through the implementation of the African Water Investment Programme (AIP), which aims to mobilise 30 billion US dollars annually to fill the investment gap in the water sector in Africa.
The main objective of the restricted technical workshop is to develop the Initial Concept Note of the Regional Investment Project for Water Security and Climate Resilience in West Africa (AIP - ECOWAS) for the Green Climate Fund (GCF). The aim of the project is to increase investment in climate resilience and water security while improving access to and use of high-quality climate information, hydrological services and early warning systems at local, national, cross-border and regional levels in West Africa.
The restricted technical workshop for regional partners is part of the implementation of the recommendations of the regional workshop on ‘Increasing investment for water security and climate resilience in West Africa: achievements, challenges and opportunities’ held on 12 and 13 December 2022 online and in person in the Council of Ministers room of the WAEMU Commission in Ouaga 2000, Burkina Faso. It is planned to organise a workshop to amend, deepen and enrich the initial concept note, which will be extended to all country and regional stakeholders in October 2024.
The work of the technical workshop was facilitated by the GWP- WA team, comprising the Executive Secretary, Mr Armand HOUANYE, the Project Manager, Mr Maxime TEBLEKOU, the Technical Assistant, Mr Hilaire ILBOUDO and Ms Desire Sandrine Amougou, Intern.
