The exchanges focused on the environmental and water resource management problems in the Mekrou sub-basin in Niger as well as the related conflict risks. The notions of disputes and conflicts, the types of disputes and potential conflicts related to the use of natural resources, including water resources, and the mechanisms, tools and techniques for diagnosing a conflict were reviewed.
The participants learned about the approach to prevention and concerted management of conflicts related to the use of natural resources by the actors and enabled them to understand their roles and responsibilities in this area. A roadmap and a follow-up mechanism for the valorisation of the knowledge acquired by the participants during the training workshop was developed. This is in view to help boost the implementation of pilot initiatives for the protection and judicious and sustainable use of natural resources in the Mekrou sub-basin in Niger, which have been selected to contribute to the implementation of the Water Development and Management Plan (SAGE) of the Mekrou sub-basin in Niger.
This workshop is held within the framework of the implementation of the activities of the Mekrou Project Phase 2 - Niger.
The "Water for Growth and Poverty Reduction in the Mekrou sub-basin of Niger" Project (Mekrou Phase 2-Niger Project, 2020-2023) is implemented by the Global Water Partnership in West Africa (GWP-WA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Water and Sanitation (MHA) of Niger and the Country Water Partnership of Niger (CWP-Niger).
