VFDM Pilot Project in Burkina Faso

A technical workshop to launch community-based flood and drought management initiatives at the Badara pilot site in the rural municipality of Bama, Hauts Bassin region of Burkina Faso was held on 16 November 2021.

This workshop is part of the implementation of the Project "Integrating Flood and Drought Management and Early Warning for Climate Change Adaptation in the Volta Basin (VFDM)" implemented by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the Volta Basin Authority (VBA) and the Global Water Partnership in West Africa (GWP-WA) and funded by the Adaptation Fund.

The community-based flood and drought management initiative is a follow-up to the community-based vulnerability and capacity mapping mission in the national portion of the Volta Basin in Burkina Faso over 15 sites vulnerable to climate risks.

The overall objective of this pilot initiative is to build capacity and increase the resilience of communities in selected vulnerable areas of the Volta Basin where floods and drought are major hazards. The self-help capacities of communities to cope with the climatic risks of floods and droughts will be strengthened under this initiative.

The VFDM will improve the effectiveness of preparedness and response measures implemented through the national forecasting and warning services (VOLTALARM).
