Ghana: 3 day meeting to review the IWRM plan for the White Volta Basin

The Ghana Country Water Partnership through WACDEP provided technical support to Water Resources Commission to hold a consultative meeting for stakeholders in the White Volta Basin, from 28th to 30th January 2015 at the Ex-Tee Crystal Hotel in Bolgatanga, Upper East Region. The aim of the meeting was to initiate the process to update the basin’s Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) Plan after its preparation in 2008 to take into account the emerging issues in the basin, on the one hand, and to use the output as part of the input to the preparation of Investment Plan for the said basin, on the other hand.

The participants were drawn from all district assemblies that fall within the basin as well as key institutions including water users and regulators of water related issues such as Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Minerals Commission, Forestry Commission, Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, the Regional Coordinating Council, Civil Society Organisations and the consultants in charge of the Investment Plan preparation Study. Presentation at the meeting were made by the White Volta Basin Officer, Mr. Aaron B. Aduna made a presentation on the mandate of the White Volta Basin Board. Also, the Water Resources Engineer in charge of surface water at WRC, Dr. Bob Alfa presented Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) tool as the background tool to elicit information and a guide to the review process.

By the end of the 3 days, participants had identified the issues which should be addressed by the plan upon revision, some mitigation measures to be adopted with specific deadlines and the institutions to constitute the new Board.Session work
