Inadequate Financial Mechanisms

Concerns over water scarcity and the need for financing the sustainable management of water resources tend to be understood and valued disproportionately in the region

Despite increasing water demands for the growing cities, population growth and worsening climate threats, some countries in the Eastern region specifically those with plenty of water resource  catchments reluctantly  prioritize and place water and climate change financing in their national budgetary frameworks and plans. 

However, there is glimmer of home that countries in the region will continue to mobilize resources to fast-track the realization of Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015.  Worth-noting, financing water prominently in a series of roundtable discussions on the post 2015 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) held in different countries of Eastern Africa region.  The region envisions a future when the financing of the sustainable water resource management will no longer be an afterthought item on the national development agenda.
