Benin raises awareness of municipalities on the charter of good governance in the water sector

The consortium implementing the Governance Component of the OmiDelta Programme organized on Friday 20 December 2019 a stakeholder information and awareness raising workshop on the charter for good governance in the water sector in Bohicon. The workshop brought together various stakeholders including communal stakeholders, NGOs, the Zou decentralized water service and the CWP partners.

The action aim is to ensure the implementation of the Charter in the Communes by improving stakeholders' knowledge of the Charter, its provisions and the accession process ; building the capacity of stakeholders and users in the water sector as well as that of the Communal Councils on the Annotated Assessment Tool on Integrity in the Water Sector (EAIE) ; and obtaining the commitment of at least five communes to formalize their adherence to the charter. Since the development of the charter and its operationalization mechanism in 2016, efforts have been made to mobilize and sensitize stakeholders with a view to their appropriation and effective adherence.

The second phase focuses on the implementation of the Charter. Its implementation calls for the establishment of an institutional framework to ensure its operationalization. The establishment of this institutional framework requires a significant number of stakeholders to join the Charter; hence the need to implement a membership strategy that involves awareness-raising.

The Governance Component of the OmiDelta Programme is financed by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands through the Netherlands Development Organization (SNV Benin), which manages the "Non-State Actors" Fund and implemented by the consortium CWP-Benin, Social WATCH Benin and ALCRER NGO.
