Flood and drought forecasting and warning systems: VFDM assesses national needs and capacities in Togo and Benin

A mission was organized to assess the capacities and needs of national structures for flood and drought forecasting and warning in order to develop integrated, tailored, sustainable and basin-wide solutions to enhance resilience to climate change at local, national and regional levels.

The mission also served as a framework to inform national structures about the start of the project and the planned activities.
BeninIn Benin and Togo, the two countries visited, it comes out that efforts have been made by Governments with the support of development partners to strengthen hydrometric and meteorological observation networks in the various basins. However, in the national portions of the Volta Basin, the structures met requested the project's support to further strengthen the observation network with automatic stations for real time reliable data. They also highlighted the capacity-building needs of their staff for the management of hydrometeorological databases, flood forecasting and warnings, and drought.
The mission is part of the implementation of the project "Integrating Flood and Drought Management and Early Warning for Climate Change Adaptation in the Volta Basin (VFDM)" funded by the Adaptation Fund and implemented by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the Volta Basin Authority (VBA) and Global Water Partnership West Africa (GWP-WA).
