Implementing the Mekrou Phase 2 Project in Niger

In spite of the health crisis related to the spread of Covid 19, GWP-WA and its partners in Niger have committed themselves to the implementation of the project kick-off activities with the recruitment of the Project Management Unit staff and the setting up of the tools for the operational implementation of the project.

The following project documents were developed: the communication and visibility plan, the monitoring-evaluation manual, the administrative, financial and accounting management procedures manual, the knowledge management strategy.

The project implementing partners are working on the preparation of the project kick-off workshop. To date, everything is ready so that after the normal resumption of activities, a date is set and hold the project kick-off meeting.

In addition, to avoid any delay in the implementation of the project activities, GWP-WA and its partners have identified some activities that will start in the coming days, in particular the recruitment of consultants for the development of the Water Development and Management Scheme of the Mekrou River sub-basin in Niger

Since January 2020, Global Water Partnership West Africa is implementing in collaboration with the Permanent Secretariat of the National Action Plan for Integrated Water Resources Management (SP PANGIRE) of Niger and the Country Water Partnership of Niger (CWP-Niger), the project "Water for growth and poverty reduction in the Mekrou sub-basin in Niger" (Mekrou Project Phase 2 - Niger) financed by the Delegation of the European Union (DUE) in Niamey for a total amount of EUR 999. 986 for a period of 42 months. Its general objective is to ''support green economic growth and poverty reduction in the parts of the Niger territory located in the Mekrou river basin and its area of influence, through integrated and concerted water management in developing areas''.

The Mekrou Phase 2 Project - Niger is part of the implementation of Niger's National Action Plan for Integrated Water Resources Management (PANGIRE 2017-2030) and follows on from the Mekrou Phase 1.
