Mono Basin establishes its executive direction in Cotonou

The Mono Basin Authority (MBA) is the latest river basin management instrument established in West Africa for the Mono River basin shared by Benin and Togo.

The Minister of Water, Rural Equipment, Village Hydraulics of Togo and the Minister of Water and Mines of Benin, current Chair of the Council of Ministers of the MBA have set up the Executive Directorate on 31 October 2019. The Executive Director if Togolese and his deputy is Beninese.

The constitutive texts for the establishment of the MBA were approved by the Ministers of the two countries (Benin and Togo) in 4 July 2014 and signed by the Heads of State and Government on 30 December 2014.

The headquarters of the MBA are established in Cotonou, Benin.

The Mono river is approximately 467 km long and drains a watershed of about 25,000 km2. It originates in Togo and serves as borderline between the two countries close to its mouth before flowing into the Bay of Benin through an extensive system of brackish lagoons and lakes (including Lake Togo).

The establishment process of the Mono Basin Authority has been led by the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) with the various assistance of partners including West Africa.

GWP-represented at the ceremony by the Executive Secretary is committed to work and support as needed the new RBO.
