Senegal: CWP discusses with General directorate of Water and the Scouts on advancing IWRM

Dr Adrien Coly, Chair of the Country Water Partnership of Senegal received Mr Ndour Niokhor, Director of Water Resources Management and Planning (DGPRE) of Senegal on Wednesday 13 May 2020 for a working meeting.

The discussions focused on the promotion of IWRM through IWRM Action Plan for which the CWP is playing a great role. It was decided that the CWP supports the advocacy on IWRM within the various institutions. DGPRE is a member of the CWP as one the representative of public administration.

The interlocutors also exchanged on the WATER POLE, an initiative of the DGPRE in the framework of the promotion of the Water Peace Nexus, and hydro-diplomacy. The CWP has been involved in this process since the beginning and reiterated its commitment to participate in the implementation of the institutional model of the Water Pole, to work towards the promotion of sustainable and innovative financing schemes and to be in synergy on peace mechanisms, solidarity, knowledge issues and capacity building in the field of water.

On different aspects concerning SDG 6, the CWP and the DGPRE have harmonized their viewpoints and committed themselves to implement projects aiming at IWRM at the level of communal territories, the preservation of water resources through awareness raising on water quality. They considered that the Dakar Forum 2021 is a good opportunity to present the progress and results on IWRM.

Mr. Ndour was pleased with the installation of the CWP in its new premises following the move of the DGPRE, which houses the CWP, to the Ministerial Sphere in Diamnadio. He reiterated his commitment to work as a member of the CWP and to strengthen this network of cooperation on water.

Earlier on 6 May 2020, the CWP chair had met with the Steering Committee members of the Scouts of Senegal (SDS). The discussions focused on the wish of CWP Senegal to develop a project taking into account major concerns in the country including:

-          Axis (i) Implementation of an action plan for water management at the scale of the valleys in Casamance. The plan will be carried out by the young people of the movements who will be trained;

- Axis (ii) Organisational development around water points (working towards a rural framework, management of land conflicts);

- Axis (iii) Development of agricultural facilities;

- Axis (iv) Development of agricultural production around water points (e.g. Duck project with YMCA (Incubators));

- Axis (v) Development of agricultural services around water points.
