Sri Lanka finds it challenging to achieve the overarching goal of the Paris Agreement mainly due to limited financing. The flexible financial solutions offered by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) plays a pivotal role in such instances, for the developing nations to access international climate financing. Yet, Sri Lanka has only one GCF accredited Direct Access Entity (DAE) which further reduces the opportunity to access adequate funding for climate action. The Global Water Partnership South Asia led 2nd Sri Lanka GCF Readiness Project facilitated workshop on Gender Policy Development and Gender Mainstreaming in GCF Activities held targeting pipeline DAEs resulted additional two nominated DAEs successfully submitting their applications to GCF.

A Regional Consultation Workshop on Drought Risk Management and Mitigation was held from January 22-24, 2024, in Bangkok, Thailand.

The Regional Council of GWP SAS nominated the Executive Director/CEO of GWP Pakistan/Pakistan Water Partnership (PWP), Mr Sardar Muhammad Tariq as the new Regional Chair (Interim), starting from 15 January 2024 through the end of the year.

“I am glad that within this short period, I was able to harvest more than 50 kilograms of cassava from the plot allocated to me which I shared with my fellow farmer families and sold the rest in the village market. I especially thank GWP Sri Lanka/SLWP for being with us from the beginning and supporting us in finding planting materials and training us on water efficient home gardening”.

The hybrid dialogue on Hydro-Diplomacy: pathways to Enhance Water Cooperation was held on 11 January 2024 in line with the “Signpost to Bali- Voices of the Unheard ” webinar series.

A two-day Gender Policy Development and Gender Mainstreaming workshop was held in Colombo on 27 and 28 July targeting the pipeline DAEs under the 2nd GCF Readiness Project in Sri Lanka.

GWP SAS, in collaboration with South Asia Rainwater Network (SARNET), Lanka Rainwater Harvesting Forum (LRWHF) and Women for Water Partnership (WfWP) jointly organised a webinar on Rainwater harvesting for disaster risk reduction in flood and drought crises on 3 August 2023. This is part of the “Signposts to Bali” initiative, a deliberation of WfWP for the preparation for the 10th World Water Forum.

Four concept notes that would ultimately be developed into full proposals were chosen during the second round of screening of the South Asia Youth Water Challenge 2023, which was held on 28 June 2023.

A workshop titled “Project Development Stakeholder Engagement, and pilot-level User Experience Survey on Data and Information Portal developed under 1st Readiness Project” was held from 23 to 24 May 2023 at Hotel Jie Jie Beach, Panadura, Sri Lanka.
