Action 12 – Strengthen water resources monitoring

In 2021, with the lead of the Government of Reconciliation and National Unity (GRUN) and with the technical support of GWP Central America through the SDG 6 IWRM Support Programme, a wide number of public-private actors in the water sector worked together to define appropriate and strategic responses for advancing in IWRM. The following action was defined as part of that process and identified as a priority action included in the action plan.

The purpose of this action is to improve the monitoring of water resources. It aims to achieve this goal by preparing and updating water balances at the basin level, as well as organizing a census of specific discharges and non-point source pollution that identifies the location and characterisation of urban, agricultural, and industrial discharges, including flows. Additionally, it aims to define methodologies to assess the status of aquifers and to incorporate water quality indicators in the Water Information System.
