Action 15 – Create incentive mechanisms to promote forest and water recharge zone conservation and protection

In 2021, with the lead of the Government of Reconciliation and National Unity (GRUN) and with the technical support of GWP Central America through the SDG 6 IWRM Support Programme, a wide number of public-private actors in the water sector worked together to define appropriate and strategic responses for advancing in IWRM. The following action was defined as part of that process and identified as a priority action included in the action plan.

The purpose of this action is to construct incentive mechanisms to encourage the conservation and protection of forest and water recharge zones. It aims to achieve this goal by designing a national methodology for environmental economic valuation of water resources, by improving strategies for monitoring volumes of water used by different users, in accordance with the National Water Resources Plan (PNRH). In addition, it aims to define the development of ecosystem service payment mechanisms for small and medium-sized farm owners who invest in conservation of water recharge zones.
