Action 3 - Enhance the status of river basin organizations

Between 2018 and 2019, the Ministry of Agriculture, in cooperation with the Country Water Partnership of Kazakhstan, brought together stakeholders from government agencies, river basin organisations, development partners, NGOs, civil society, academia, and the private sector to define a series of strategic actions for advancing on IWRM in Kazakhstan. The following action was defined as part of that process and identified as a priority action to be included in an action plan.

The purpose of this action is to strengthen institutional mandates and capacities to lead IWRM implementation at the basin level by enhancing the status of river basin organisations in the country. Specifically, it aims at enhancing the status and powers of the Basin Water Inspectorates (BWI) in the Water Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan and to change their status from inspectorates to organisations for basin management.
