GWP Africa’s involvement in regional processes, particularly through its Memorandum of Understanding with the African Ministers' Council on Water (AMCOW), is aimed at achieving the sustainable management of Africa’s water resources.
Discussions following the opening ceremony examined the common ground for achieving water security in Africa.
The Water Week focuses on the need for African countries to translate their commitments, declarations and intentions into action, such as financing water infrastructure and sanitation, and climate change adaptation. Africa is challenged to respond to climate change and this requires integrated approaches in water resources management; sustainable environment management; implementation of international protocols; investing more on irrigated agriculture; finding alternatives sources of energy; development of infrastructures and storage and monitoring, analysing and sharing climate data.
A team of ministers, lead by the South African Minister for Water Resources, Hon Buyelwa Patience Sonjica, paid a visit to the GWP booth learning more about the GWP’s mission. The Minister commended the work done but urged GWP to step up its support to countries in the wake of climate change.
