“Water Security for Gender Parity” – Celebrating IWD 2016 – Ms Bogadi Mathangwane (Botswana)

  1.  Tell Us, Who is Bogadi Mathangwane?

My full names are Mrs. Bogadi Theresa Mathangwane, National Deputy Director responsible for Water Resources planning, development and management in Botswana.  I am an International Water Resource Management expert and active in promoting water conservation and water demand management measures and practices thus promoting water use efficiency in the country. I possess broad background in social, economic, environmental and technical aspects of water resources.

2.  What would you say are the main challenges in your work as a woman?

I was the first Motswana woman to ascend to the executive cadre in this technical government organization which is predominantly male dominated.  Building that trust and confidence within my counterparts or colleagues was therefore challenging but as my son always motivates me saying, ”Throw me to the wolves and I’ll come back leading the pack”.

3: What have you done to overcome these obstacles/challenges?

I never thought too little of myself instead I had dreams and goals to achieve not focusing on my limitations. Naturally I am a hard worker, good team player and passionate with my work. I also have strong interpersonal relationships and good communication skills.  All these traits ccoupled with my expertise and experience have allowed me to overcome most challenges in my work.

4. What advise would you give to other women in similar situations (in the water world)?

To all the ladies out there, there is no work specifically made for males nor females. If you believe you can do it then you can achieve it. Hard work and perseverance are key. Be efficient, effective and always have room to improve. Stay motivated and make your dreams a reality!!
