Mongolia to the World Toilet Day

The meeting titled “Sanitation Alliance for World Toilet Day” was organized by CWP-Mongolia and World Vision on November 19, 2024, in Mongolia.

Over 140 schoolchildren, students from various universities, and representatives of NGOs attended the event. Since the establishment of the World Toilet Association on November 19, 2001, this day has been celebrated annually as "World Toilet Day."

The theme of the 24th World Toilet Day is "Toilets – A Place for Peace." This theme emphasizes the importance of safe sanitation in creating a peaceful and climate-resilient future for everyone. One of Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG6) targets is to ensure access to safe toilets for all by 2030.

Open defecation not only harms the environment and affects socio-economic conditions but also contributes to high mortality rates among children aged 0-5 in affected countries. In response, the World Toilet Organization, in collaboration with governmental, non-governmental, and international organizations in Mongolia, organized a national "Toilet" advocacy campaign on November 19, 2024, at the National University of Mongolia.

Participants engaged in an open-mic discussion to address pressing sanitation challenges and propose solutions, creating a platform to amplify youth voices and inspire positive change. During the event, eight organizations conducted interactive activities, including examining hand bacteria, exploring water contamination, and introducing new toilet technologies. These activities enhanced young people’s understanding of sanitation and hygiene issues.

Leaders from organizations such as the Water Agency, CWP-Mongolia, UNICEF, World Vision International Mongolia, the National Center for Public Health, the Mongolian Toilet Association, and the World Toilet Organization highlighted the significance of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) for sustainable development. They also announced the “For a Healthy and Clean Tomorrow” competition, inviting innovative ideas to improve sanitation.

CWP-Mongolia held a press conference focusing on SDG6 and its targets (6.1-6.2). CWP-Mongolia Chairman Prof. Basandorj delivered a presentation on improving sanitation through innovation and technological development aimed at water conservation.
