The regional workshop on SDG indicator 6.5.2 was held on February 12-13, in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
The aim of the workshop was to share best practices in preparing and using SDG indicator 6.5.2 reporting to develop water cooperation, as well as to facilitate the development of specific measures aimed at achieving SDG target 6.5 in Central Asia.
The event was organized by the International Water Assessment Centre (IWAC), the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Scientific Information Centre of the Interstate Coordination Water Commission of Central Asia (SIC ICWC) with the financial support of the GIZ.
The event brought together government officials from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan working on surface and groundwater management and environmental protection, as well as representatives of international and public organizations and independent experts.
GWP CACENA Regional Coordinator Guljamal Nurmukhammedova and GWP CACENA TEC Chairman Vadim Sokolov actively took part in discussions.
During discussions participants identified key challenges hindering the achievement of SDG indicator 6.5.2 in the region and developed practical measures to accelerate its implementation. Particular attention was paid to strengthening cooperation in transboundary river basins, lakes and aquifers in Central Asia. The workshop also analysed SDG indicator 6.5.2, its practical benefits, as well as the developing countries' capacity to prepare reports and coordination of this process at the basin level.
