Chad validates its strategy and implementation plan for the water convention

Chad is the first African country to join the Water Convention in 2018. Aware that a large part of its water resources is shared, its accession to this convention will enable the country to better manage the resource in a concerted manner which adequately meets the growing needs of the population in a context where water security is increasingly threatened by climate change.

To make this agreement operational, the government of Chad has undertaken, with the support of its partners, to draw up a strategy and an implementation plan for the agreement. This initiative began with the identification of challenges linked to the implementation of the convention, and the proposal of concrete solutions to implement the convention.

The results of this first exercise were presented at a national validation workshop for the convention's strategy and implementation plan on April 4 and 5, 2024 in N’Djamena, attended by some sixty stakeholders from Chad's water sector. The comments and inputs provided by participants will be taken into account by a select committee set up for the activity, led by the Ministry. GWP-CAf was represented at the workshop by its regional coordinator, Mr. Djibrilla Mohamadou. The organization was invited, along with other technical and financial partners, to present opportunities for supporting the implementation of the strategy. GWP-CAf presented a two-point approach:

- The first short-term point is the launch of the  African Union's multi-country Readiness project, which counts Chad as a member and beneficiary. A concept note will be developed within the framework of this project for submission to the GCF: the actions set out in the strategy will form part of this concept note;

- The second point is on the prioritization of the strategy's actions with future projects that GWP will prepare, following the example of the project submitted to the ADB with IUCN and the ECCAS Regional Water Resources Management Centre.

GWP-CAf's participation in the workshop also provided an opportunity to exchange views with UNECE partners on Cameroon's support for the development of its strategy and Congo's support for its accession to the convention, both of which should be completed by 2025.
