Together with GWP Med and GWP WAF, the GWP CAf, co-organized the regional conference on Financing Water-related Adaptation Projects for the Implementation of NDCs and SDGs: Challenges, Opportunities and Prospects, held on 24-25 April 2018 in Nouakchott, Mauritania.
This conference aimed to share experience and knowledge in the implementation of water-related adaptation actions within the NDCs to achieve the SDGs by participating countries, and to see how to access available funding. Indeed, GWP CAf intervened in the framework of the project "Improving the Resilience of WASH services in the Mayo Tsanaga sub-basin through pilot initiatives", implemented by the CWP of Cameroon in the Far North region of Cameroon in partnership with UNICEF Cameroon, with the aim of developing tools and strengthening the capacities of stakeholders to ensure the sustainability of WASH services in a climate change context.
During this conference several countries participated: Mauritania, Tunisia, Algeria, Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, Morocco, Cameroon, Tunisia and Libya. Each country had at least one presentation which took place in 06 sessions. Thus, Mr Djibrilla MOHAMADOU, representing GWP CAf, moderated the third session of the conference, whose theme was: Ensuring water security and climate resilience: what investments for what adaptation projects in the water sector?
At the end of the sessions, the sharing of experiences enabled the country lagging in the implementation of the NDCs to understand the steps needed to catch up. Also, the levers on access to financing through the GEF (Global Environment Facility) and GCF (Green Climate Facility) were presented as well as other possible sources of financing. Actions were identified at the end of this conference and shared with all participants to prioritize their implementation and to share with the organizing team for follow-up.
