China NDC Brief (2022 Updated)

GWPO is launching the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) brief special newsletters.

In 2018, GWP prepared a first global report analyzing the inclusion of water in NDCs around the world, titled Preparing to Adapt: The Untold Story of Water in Climate Change Adaptation Processes  which covered 80 countries.

In 2019, to go deeper into the opportunities for advancing IWRM and reaching water security through the NDCs (and vice versa), GWP conducted a deeper dive into 15 countries (Untold Story of Water in Climate Adaptation Part II: 15 Countries Speak), which included China as one of the countries focused on. Both documents were released to coincide with the UNFCCC CoPs.

In 2020, efforts to produce individual country briefs commenced, but were delayed due to, among other reasons, the global pandemic, and changes in human resources within the climate team. This effort was resumed in 2021, with the updating and finalization of some of the 15 individual briefs, which should be concluded and promoted at the national level by the end of 2022.

Early 2023, GWP China regional office supported GWPO to complete the Chinese version of the China NDC brief, which was first compiled in 2019 and updated in 2021-22. The final version of the China NDC brief was launched on the GWP China Regional blog on WeChat afterwards.

In COUNTRY BRIEF: CHINA, you can learn why integrated approaches to
water management are essential for climate-resilient development, how China has laid a solid foundation in that sense, and what needs to change if China is to meet its commitments under the Paris Agreement and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). SDG target 6.5, on integrated water resources management (IWRM), can make that climate connection. This brief looks at all four dimensions of IWRM, namely the enabling environment, institutions and participation, management instruments, and financing.
