GWP China Groundwater Working Committee Carries Out Specialized Research in the Laiyuan Spring Basin

Recently, to fully implement the Central Governmental Thought on Ecological Civilization and advance the ecological conservation and restoration of the Laiyuan Spring Basin, a joint research team, with the technical support of the GWP China Groundwater Working Committee and led by Wang Feng'an, Deputy Director and Secretary-General of the Committee, conducted a specialized field investigation in Laiyuan County of Baoding City. The team was composed of experts in hydrology, geological exploration, ecological environment and other related fields, as well as the secretariat staff of the Committee.

The research was carried out through a combination of on-site inspections and symposium discussions. The research team conducted field surveys on the core outcrop areas of the spring basin, major rivers and hydrological stations within its boundary, as well as key geological structural points in the surrounding areas. They carefully monitored the spring discharge and water quality, systematically analyzed the distribution characteristics of river systems, and held in-depth exchanges and discussions on such professional issues as the demarcation of the spring basin boundary and the groundwater recharge-runoff-discharge mechanism.

At the research symposium, Secretary-General Wang Feng'an briefed the participants on the establishment background and functional orientation of the Groundwater Working Committee, and emphasized that this research is one of the key annual work priorities of the Committee. Li Mingliang, Deputy Director of the Committee, pointed out two core technical issues that need to be focused on in this research: first, the primary factors affecting the dynamic changes of spring water; second, the determination method of ecological flow for rivers in the spring basin. Zhao Hongfen, the Level-3 Chief Engineer of the Laiyuan County Water Resources Bureau, delivered a detailed report on the basic conditions of the spring basin, the current situation of water resource protection and management, the main existing problems and the next work plans. The participating experts put forward targeted suggestions for the protection and management of the spring basin based on their respective professional expertise.

                                                                           The Site Investigation

This investigation is both a systematic assessment of the current hydrogeological and ecological status of the Laiyuan Spring Basin and a professional academic exchange activity that pools multidisciplinary wisdom to explore conservation paths. Through in-depth field investigations and face-to-face discussions, the core challenges in the protection of the Laiyuan Spring Basin have been further clarified, which lays a solid scientific foundation for the subsequent analysis of factors affecting spring discharge, ecological flow assessment and the formulation of conservation and restoration strategies. The Groundwater Working Committee will continue to give play to its role as a resource integration platform and think tank, and keep focusing on and providing professional support for the scientific protection and sustainable development of the Laiyuan Spring Basin.

Relevant responsible persons and technical backbones of the water conservancy departments of Baoding City and Laiyuan County accompanied the investigation.
