MOU signing ceremony between GWP China and WWF China

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed between GWP China and WWF China for a five-year cooperation framework on January 23, 2011, Beijing.

Before the ceremony, a constructive and in-depth discussion was held between Mr. Wang Shucheng, Chair of GWP China, Mr.Wang Hao, Vice Chair of GWP China and Mr. Georg Schwede, Deputy Director General of WWF and Mr. Jim Gradoville, the Country Representative of WWF China Some other persons from GWP China and WWF China were also present.
For the further cooperation, after the discussion, the two parties identified four priorities based upon the framework of MOU as follows: First, to give full play to the matured platforms of two parties in co-organizing the high-level events and sub-forums of the Yangtze River Forum and the International Yellow River Forum(IYRF) with specific hot topics to introduce new concept and international best practices into China and help to explore the solutions via individual network.
Second, to organize policy advocacy activities and workshops regarding IWRM, IRBM and ecosystem service or co-sponsor key research programs to facilitate policy decisions by embedding concepts of environmental flows, water sourcing area protection, climate change adaptation and ecosystem management.
Third, to jointly conduct public education or awareness rising and improve capacity building through training courses, field studies, visiting each other and sharing information. Meanwhile, for raising public awareness, two organizations will conduct exchange activities or produce brochures to better disseminate concept of conservation and call for actions.
Fourth and finally, to develop and submit policy recommendations to high-level decision-makers by consolidating existing research results of both parties.
After the discussion, the two organizations hold that this is a golden opportunity at present and also for a long-term in China since this country has speeded up it development and reform in water sector. Under these circumstances with catalyst of this MOU, the two organizations will strengthen exchanges and cooperation and contribute to the adoption of advanced concepts of river basin and water resources management and protection and the harmony between human and water and for the building of “energy-saving and environment-friendly” society in China. In the meantime, the two organizations will also promote sustainable development and protection of global water resources by sharing related Chinese experiences on management concept, skill and practices with the rest of the world.
