The compilation of National Integrated Planning of Water Resources in China was launched in 2002, organized by National Development and Reform Commission and Ministry of Water Resources as well as jointly underpinned by Ministry of Land and Resources, Ministry of Environmental Prevention, Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, Ministry of Agriculture, State Forestry of Administration and China Meteorological Administration. Since the initiation of this plan, GWP China has paid attention to its progress. For the better practice of IWRM into the plan, GWP China hosted a high level round table meeting of “Integrated Planning of Water Resources and IWRM” in April, 2005 and gathered consultative knowledge from governmental agencies, scientists and professionals of all social sectors. The delegates, through this meeting, exchanged their experiences towards drafting and implementing the plan and developed wider cooperation between different departments. The product of this meeting assisted to improvement of the integrated planning.
By the approval of the State Council, this plan is expected to be the primary reference to the water development, distribution, saving, protection and management in a long term. It is playing a role as stimulus towards sustainable use of water resources and sustainable development of society and economy in China.
