The Post-quake Water Facilities Reconstruction Session, GWP China Shaanxi

GWP China Shaanxi, jointly with Drinking Water Safety Center of MWR, Shaanxi CHES, WWF Beijing Office, and with support of Shaanxi People’s Congress General Office, Shaanxi Provincial Water Resources Department, Hanzhong City Government, held “Post-quake Water Facilities Reconstruction Session” on November 11 to 13, 2009 in Hanzhong City, Shaanxi Province.

The water facilities in Hangzhong and Baoji in Shaanxi Province were mainly destroyed due to the catastrophic earthquake on May 12, 2008. After one and half year of post-quake reconstruction, the participants visited and investigated disaster zones whose water works were almost destroyed, including Chengcang District in Baoji City, Hanzhong City, Mian County and Ningqiang County. The relevant experts concluded experiences and discussed about existed problems. The participants recommended working out disaster control standard and enhancing rehabilitation quality through advanced technology and new material and skills in order to accomplish reconstruction within 3 years.

As one of post-quake contributions to Shaanxi Province, the GWP China Shaaxi funded Chencang District of Baoji City to build up water supply facilities for the three village groups of Maojiagou village, Tianwang Town. The earthquake severely damaged the former water supply facilities and caused the power–operated well to drop down and lack of water output.  The new water supply facilities funded by GWP solve the drinking problems for 189 families, 842 people.
