On June 22, 2011, the Workshop on Groundwater Development and Utilization in Jinghui Canal Irrigation Area was taken place in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province. The workshop was sponsored by the GWP China Shaanxi, co-sponsored by Shaanxi Provincial Water Resources Department,Shaanxi Provincial Hydraulic Engineering Society and Shaanxi Provincial Irrigation Systems Association, organized by the Jinghui Canal Management Bureau and supported by GWP China and the Agricultural and Industrial Committee of the Shaanxi Provincial People’s Congress.
The workshop attracted over 80 participants from the Ministry of Water Resources,China Irrigation Systems Association, Shaanxi Provincial People’s Congress, Shaanxi Provincial Women’s Federation. Shaanxi Provincial Development and Reform Commission, large and medium irrigation systems management bureaus, related divisions of Shaanxi Provincial Water Resources Department and Chang’an University.
Moderated by Mr. Liu Shuji, Chair of GWP China Shaanxi, the opening ceremony of the workshop was kicked off with the addressing of Mr. Zhang Xiaoning, the Deputy Director General of the Department of Irrigation, Drainage and Rural Water Supply of the Ministry of Water Resources; Mr. Khalid Mohtadullah, the Senior Advisor of GWP; Mr. Zheng Rugang, the Coordinator of GWP China; Mr. Wu Qianjin, the Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Shaanxi Provincial People’s Congress and Mr. Wang Feng, the Director General of Shaanxi Provincial Water Resources Department. Mr. Guo Yongsheng, the Deputy Director General of the Department of Policies, Laws and Regulations of the Ministry of Water Resources and Mr. Ji Renbao, Secretary General of China Irrigation Systems Association were also invited to participate and give comments in the workshop.
The section of key note speeches was moderated by Mr. Shi Jian, the Vice Chair of GWP China Shaanxi by hearing the presentations of Jinghui Canal Irrigation Management Bureau; subject study team of Chang’an University and Shaanxi Groundwater Monitoring and Management Bureau. The section of discussions was moderated by Mr. Sun Ping’an, the Vice Chair of GWP China Shaanxi with fully interaction among the participants. The participants reached common understanding and consensus on better management of irrigation areas with the rational development and utilization of groundwater.
