Preceding the workshop, GWP China Hunan organized the summary session of its first Council whose term will end before the end of this year. The members of the second Council were elected after the summary meeting. Afterwards, the participants discussed about the improvement of Xiangjiang River Basin management and strategies of harmony between water carrying capacity and social-economic development through optimal arrangement of water resources and protection of water and ecological environment.
The participants had exchanges of ideas and discussions on such topics as management mechanism, water resources distribution and management, water use efficiency, water environment and flood control and drainage structures. After the discussions, some common understanding and consensus were reached as follows:
1) Being the largest and the “Mother River” of the province, the higher importance should be attached to the better management of Xiangjiang River Basin under the situation of the rapid social and economic development and urbanization and the increase of water demand;
2) More efforts are needed on the integrated water resources management in the Basin, increase of water use efficiency and improvement of water environment;
3) Such management mechanism that can ensure and regulate integrated the water resources in the middle and the lower reaches of the River over the whole year should be established;
4) A special organization should be set up for the better management of the Xiangjiang River Basin.
