South Africa Hosts First Regional Consultation on Valuing Water

To accelerate a change in the way governments, societies, and the private sector use and manage water, the UN Secretary-General and World Bank Group President convened a High Level Panel on Water (HLPW) at the Heads of State and Government level.

South Africa has been chosen to be the first country to host a HLPW regional consultation meeting that aims at providing the leadership required championing a comprehensive, inclusive, and collaborative way of developing and managing water resources, and improving water and sanitation related services.

This HLPW regional consultation will be attended by South Africa’s Minister of Water and Sanitation H.E. Ms Nomvula Mokonyane,H.E. Mr Senzeni Zokwana Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, H.E. Ms Mmamolo koKubayi Minister of Energy, and representatives of The World Bank, United Nations, AFDB, Ministry of Foreign Affairs Government of Netherlands, and Global Water Partnership.

The purpose of the regional consultations is to obtain views from a wide array of regional and country level stakeholders on the proposals from the HLPW on the Valuing Water preamble and principles. The Consultations will build awareness and examine the regional/country level relevance of global perspectives, and provide inputs, options and recommendations that will enhance resolutions from the HLPW.

The HLPW is aimed at developing a set of shared principles to motivate and encourage governments, business and civil society to consider water’s multiple values and to guide the transparent incorporation of these values into decision-making by policymakers, communities, and businesses.

Members of the HLPW are Heads of State from Australia, Bangladesh, Hungary, Jordan, Mauritius (co-chair), Mexico (co-chair), Netherlands, Peru, Senegal, South Africa, and Tajikistan.
