AMCOW recognises GWP's contribution

At the June 2010 meeting of the African Minister’s Council on Water (AMCOW) GWP's work for advancing the water agenda on the continent was recognised. The AMCOW Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) appreciated GWP's contribution and gave GWP an additional mandate to work in four key areas:

• IWRM: GWP and AMCOW sub-regions were requested to evaluate water’s role in meeting all eight Millennium Development Goals and to contribute to the UN General Assembly special summit in September 2010.

• Climate Change: GWP and AMCOW TAC are to strengthen consideration of water in reducing vulnerability to adverse climate, and contribute to Africa’s common position to COP 16 and 17.

• Managing Africa’s shared waters: AMCOW TAC sub-committee will together with GWP review the UN-Water Course Convention in view of the Sharm el Sheik decisions.

• Gender Mainstreaming: GWP and other partners will prepare sub-regional plans of action and regularly report to AMCOW on progress in gender mainstreaming.
