GWP’s VISION is a water secure world. Our MISSION is to advance governance and management of water resources for sustainable and equitable development.

A network of networks, we ensure the ‘voices of water’ can inﬂuence local, national, regional, and global development priorities. GWP Regions

This is where you can find links to the websites of our Regional Water Partnerships (RWPs). RWPs are closest to the countries where we work. They share knowledge and learning across national boundaries and are expected to have an open, inclusive, and gender-sensitive policies for bringing together as wide a group of stakeholders as possible to solve water problems.

GWP Commitments to Gender

GWP Chair Dr Letitia A Obeng spoke at the”High Level event Leaders’ Forum on the Future Women Want: Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment for Sustainable Development” on 19 June 2012 at Rio+20, organized by UN Women, in collaboration with the Government of Brazil.

The event brought together leaders and experts from governments, the UN System, civil society , academia and the private sector to discuss and reaffirm the centrality and the inter-linkages of gender equality and women’s empowerment with the three dimensions of sustainable development—social, economic and environmental.

GWP Chair Dr Letitia A Obeng said, “The involvement of both women and men in all aspects of our work is one of the Dublin principles that help define GWP. GWP is committed to support and spearhead activities that can assist water stakeholders at all levels to make this principle central and operational globally, regionally and at the national level. As part of the implementation of our current (2009-2013) Strategy, GWP is developing strategies on gender and youth with several partners and strategic allies contributing in different ways. The GWP Global Gender Strategy aims to facilitate the development of gender responsive policies and programs where they do not yet exist across our Partnership, as well as to continue to further equal gender participation at all levels where the Partnership is engaged including in our Partnership structures (which have explicit guidelines on this matter).”

Together with the participating representatives, GWP signed an agreement with commitments to the Women Ministers and Leaders for the Environment. The GWP commitments are to:

Support at least 30 countries in the next 5 years to have domestic gender mainstreaming policies and instruments in water resource management that are regularly monitored, evaluated and reported.
Encourage and support government departments, water development agencies, non-governmental organizations and capacity building organizations in those countries to institutionalize and integrate gender perspectives in their work on the ground.
Contribute to addressing the intergenerational dimension for long term sustainability by developing strategies and tools to engage young women, men and children at different levels- international, regional and country.

This event will be followed by the Women Leaders’ Summit on the Future Women Want on 21 June 2012.
