GWP Regions

GWP Partners Trained at Annual Transboundary Workshop

Up to 45 participants from more than 20 countries participated in the the 3^rd annual ‘’International Law and Transboundary Freshwaters” workshop, organized by the University of Dundee on 11-14 June 2012. It was the second time GWP provided support to participants which are GWP Partners and 28 participants were from GWP Partner organizations.

With 2013 declared by the UN as the International Year of Water Cooperation, GWP will continue to explore how transboundary cooperation and the application of IWRM bring benefits to the nations of the world. The purpose of the joint workshop was to explore the function of international law related to transboundary waters and to provide the participants with an in-depth understanding of rules and principles of international (water) law. It was a part of a postgraduate module on the International Water Law at the University of Dundee and combined lecturers from research, academia, intergovernmental organizations, basin organizations and practitioners. It was complemented by case studies that ranged from discussions on the application of international law, procedural rules, institutional arrangements, and dispute settlement mechanisms.

Introductory presentations, given by Prof. Patricia Wouters and Dr. Sergej Vinogradov, brought all participants to the understanding of evolution and current application of international water laws, treaties and founding principles. A presentation on equitable and reasonable utilisation of water resources, no significant harm and ecosystem protection, provided by Owen McIntyre gave an essential understanding of the foundation of formulating the UN Watercourses Convention (1997) and UNECE Water Convention (1992, Helsinki).

GWP Head of Network Operations, John Metzger and GWP Knowledge Management Officer, Danka Thalmeinerova actively participated at the workshop with presentations on the Mekong and Danube basins, also briefly introducing GWP activities in the regions and the IWRM ToolBox as an online source for knowledge.
