Knowledge and Sustainability Focus for Panama Canal

The Panama Canal, the 77 km long canal joining the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans is a key conduit for international maritime trade. In light of the decision to widen the canal, improvements in how the canal basin is managed has taken on increasing importance.

In August 2010, GWP Panama facilitated a workshop on “Designing a knowledge management system to make decisions in the Panama Canal Basin.” Seventeen representatives came from institutions such as Ciudad del Saber Foundation (FCDS), the International Center for Sustainable Development (CIDES), the University of South Florida (USF) and the Panama Canal Authority (ACP).

The participants agreed to develop a program for the integrated management of knowledge for the sustainability of the Panama Canal.
