GWP Regions

They share knowledge and learning across national boundaries and are expected to have an open, inclusive, and gender-sensitive policies for bringing together as wide a group of stakeholders as possible to solve water problems.

Progress in Water Reform in El Salvador

The Water Reform process in El Salvador has been advancing rapidly, thanks to the willingness of the government to work with different stakeholders committed to good water governance.

The Water Law is currently being revised by a special group from the National Congress - the Environment and Climate Change Commission, and it is expected that all sectors that have been active in the Water Reform process will be involved in this revision.

Parallel to the Water Law process, two subsector laws have been drafted and are at the final stage. The first is the Irrigation and Drainage Law, which is being developed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAG), and the second is the Water and Sanitation Law, which is being developed by the National Administration of Aqueducts and Sewers (ANDA).

The government will be launching policies that will contribute to the strengthening of the Reform: the Environment Policy – which was approved by the President and the Council of Ministers on June 4, 2012 – the Water Resources Policy, the Irrigation Policy and the Water and Sanitation Policy.

GWP El Salvador, together with other partner organizations, has supported the Technical Secretariat of the Presidency (STP), in different venues, in the discussion and analysis of the drafts for the different laws and policies. One venue is the Water Bureau, which is part of the National Competitiveness Initiative, which includes research institutions, NGOs, international cooperation, the private sector and water users.
