GWP Regions

Water Agenda Consultations in Costa Rica

Costa Rica has made significant progress in the past decade in expanding access to water supply and sanitation, but the sector still faces challenges in low sanitation connections, poor service quality, and low cost recovery. GWP Costa Rica is organizing workshops as part of a consultation process to be carried out from November 2012 through January 2013 for the elaboration of the Water Agenda 2013-2030.

The Water Agenda will include long term priority actions necessary for the State to guarantee water for present and future generations and is part of the pilot project for the improvement on water availability in Costa Rica, financed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Costa Rica is one of three countries which have been chosen, together with Oman and the Philippines, to build capacity at the national level of the compilation, management and interpretation of data on water resources and in the use of techniques to improve resources management. The Water Agenda, an outline of priority actions for sustainable water management in a country, is intended as a complement the IAEA’s Water Availability Enhancement Project (IWAVE) now under implementation in Costa Rica.

In November, six workshops were conducted with academia, municipalities, non-governmental organizations, as well as with the regions of San Carlos, Limon, and Guanacaste. The Water Agenda position paper was shared and discussed with a total of 300 participants.

GWP Costa Rica is a strategic partner in the consultation process through the involvement of different partners of the network.
