GWP Mediterranean participated in the two-day Workshop ‘How Members of Parliament can better contribute to the effective De-pollution of the Mediterranean’ which was organized within the framework of the Horizon 2020 Capacity Building/ Mediterranean Environment Programme and constituted the first international meeting of Mediterranean MPs after the events of the Arab Spring.
By the end of the workshop, participants increased their understanding of the main challenges to be addressed in the Mediterranean and regional frameworks, initiatives and cooperation opportunities such as Horizon 2020, the MedPartnership, and the EC supported “Sustainable Water Integrated Management-Support Mechanism (SWIM)”, presented by GWP Mediterranean which is a member of the project consortium. SWIM is a Regional Technical Assistance Programme launched by the European Commission to contribute to the dissemination and effective implementation of sustainable water management policies and practices in the Southern Mediterranean Region.
Also, in an effort to address the need for policy based on sound scientific information, participants gained knowledge on the available resources and the ways these can be used throughout the process of the development and implementation of policies. On its second day, the workshop was hosted by the Special Permanent Committee on Environmental Protection of the Hellenic Parliament and was held at the Greek Parliament.
Participants were informed of regional platforms for dialogues between Parliamentarians such as the Circle of Mediterranean Parliamentarians for Sustainable Development (COMPSUD), the Secretariat of which is facilitated by MIO-ECSDE and GWP Med.
