GWP Regions

Mediterranean Launch of Water Governance & Financing Project

Over 100 participants from 22 countries across the Mediterranean attended the recent launch of a joint GWP/OECD project on water governance and financing in the Mediterranean.

Designed and jointly implemented by the Global Water Partnership Mediterranean and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), this regional project was labelled under the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) framework in July 2012.

The Governance & Financing for the Mediterranean Water Sector project aims to identify key governance bottlenecks to mobilise financing through public private partnerships for the Mediterranean water sector. The project will support the development of consensual action plans based on international good practices. It involves work at national and regional levels over a period of three years, ending in 2016.

So far seven Mediterranean countries have signed up for the project: Albania, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine and Tunisia. More countries will be engaged over the next years.

The project was formally launched at a high–level conference 28-29 May in Barcelona. The conference was organised by GWP Mediterranean in close cooperation and under the auspices of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) Secretariat.
